Jonathan Astill Dip. Arb.(RFS). M.Arbor.A is the director and arboriculturalist for Astill Treecare and is a professional member of the Arboricultural Association.
In 1992, he started his career ‘in the trees’ and ‘on the tools’ undertaking domestic tree surgery and woodland management operations in Surrey and Hampshire. He continued with this work whilst studying Arboriculture at Merrist Wood College where, in his middle year, was employed as a climbing arborist for a large Arboricultural Contractor based in Vienna, Austria.
After continuing to climb for an Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor until 1997, he moved into Local Authority as a Tree Surveyor for Test Valley Borough Council and then progressed to Arboricultural Officer at Southampton City Council.
Between 2000 and 2005 Jonathan took a break from Local Authority and worked for Merrist Wood College and Sparsholt College as a lecturer and practical instructor in Arboriculture. He qualified as a Teacher in Further Education whilst delivering and assessing the curriculum to a wide range of arboricultural and forestry courses.
From 2005 to 2011 Jonathan worked for East Dorset District Council where he led the tree team as Senior Arboricultural Officer for the last four years.
Since Astill Treecare was founded in May 2011, Jonathan has provided professional arboricultural advice to; householders, large estates , botanical gardens, private and academy schools, a range of city, borough, parish and parochial councils, recreational and commercial landowners. During his career, Jonathan has organised community tree planting events, given talks and presentations to interest groups, parish councils and committees, arranged successful study tours in the UK and Holland, chaired the Dorset Tree and Landscape Officer’s Group and sat on the Education and Training Committee for the Arboricultural Association.

As a member of the Arboricultural Association, Jonathan Astill is bound by their code of ethics and professional conduct. Everyone likes to know where they stand. We aspire to providing correct and honest advice based on the information to hand. In short, we will inform and advise our clients on what they need to hear and provide suitable options if the advice is not always what they want hear.

During the initial enquiry we will ask you for some more detail about your trees and what you wish to achieve. For larger tree populations, it may be necessary to make a preliminary visit and discuss your objectives on site. Once we have established what you aim to achieve, we shall prepare a clear proposal stating:
– what we will do for you,
– when it will be completed by
– what we will charge
For urgent tasks, we shall agree a deadline with you and stick to it. Non-urgent tasks may take a little longer but we will still agree a realistic timeframe so you are always kept in the picture.
To ensure that there are no hidden or escalating costs, we aim to provide a fixed quote based on the information you have provided or we have gathered. Once you have received a proposal and quote from us, we will always ask for a written instruction (email) before we proceed.
Astill Treecare does not currently charge VAT, keeping prices lower for non-VAT registered clients.

We are insured to provide professional arboricultural advice. We do not carry out tree surgery and it follows that we don’t hold cover to for tree surgery work. In this regard you are advised to check that if you are paying for advice from a tree surgery contractor, that they hold the relevant professional indemnity insurance.
